Being Satori Circus

A Performance Documentary In Five Acts

In 1988, the performance artist, ‘Satori Circus’ is created. To this day, thirty-four years later, the award-winning Satori Circus continues to astonish in live performances. ‘Being Satori Circus ~ A Performance Documentary in Five Acts’ tells the story in a hybrid non-fiction/fiction narrative of this history while keeping the mystery intact. Thirty Detroit Artists of all stripes help to answer this mystery.

Filmmaker, Mark Finnell explores and takes us on the journey of the many facets of Satori Circus and his effect on others, as well as how this artist continues despite being unsung nationally. It is a love letter to those who persevere in artistic practice. Through personal narrative and interviews with collaborators, cultural historians, and astute observers of this avant-garde underground scene, we are offered a peak behind the curtain to this often-misunderstood world of performance art. This is Mark’s first feature-length documentary film. He has completed four short narrative films, that have screened at other film festivals.
